Beyoncé’s musical film “Black Is King” was a much-needed cultural reset that served as an ode to Africa. One of the music videos from the Disney movie “Brown Skin Girl”, a love letter to black girls everywhere, was nominated for Best Music Video at the Grammy Awards 2021!

With the single released in 2019, Brown Skin Girl became an international hit that created challenges and gave black women the love on wax we deserve. The video was shot by Nigerian-British director Jenn Nkiru, with whom ESSENCE spoke about the song and the video. “I think brown skin, black skin, dark skin is just so beautiful. I only see divinity in it. It’s beautiful, “she said.” This should be an endorsement of that. That’s the intent to be an endorsement. “

Nkiru also shared that she wants black women of all colors to feel deeply valued through their work. “We really wanted to, and I really wanted this piece to really encompass the breadth of black and brown femininity,” she said.

The video featured popular personalities such as Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, Lupita Nyong’o, Tina Knowles-Lawson and Beyoncé’s eldest daughter Blue Ivy.

Beyoncé has been nominated for a number of other Grammys, including “Best Rap Song”, “Best Music Film” and “Best Rap Performance”. She leads the most artists for the 2021 Grammys with 9 nominations. This continues her record of being the most nominated woman in Grammy history.

Congratulations to Beyoncé and black women around the world!
