Is It Too Early For A Cocktail? No, I do not think so. We celebrated this summer with Kir Royale cocktails and I wanted to introduce you to this wonderfully bubbly, slightly pink drink.
The Kir Royale is a champagne cocktail with a dash of French berry liqueur. Cocktails really don’t get any easier.
Kir Royales are a blushing alternative to sparkling rosé or pure champagne. Simply swirling two ingredients together makes Kir Royales look more solemn, if you will.
You can serve Kir Royales at birthday parties, showers, brunch, Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, or any happy occasion. They are so easy to make and still feel a little fancy. Ready?
Kir Royale ingredients
Kir Royales are so easy to make that you hardly need a recipe. You will need two ingredients:
- Chilled champagne: Champagne is traditional and tastes wonderful. Similar sparkling wines like Prosecco and Cava also work. Whatever you choose, buy one brut (dry) variety so that your drinks are not too sweet.
- Chambord or Crème de Cassis: Both are berry liqueurs that will make your cocktail slightly pink and slightly sweet. Both contain around 15 to 16 percent alcohol by volume, so your drinks will be just a touch juicier.
Add fresh raspberries to your list if you want a sweet side dish. For the record: My Kir Royales rarely arrive garnished when I order them in a restaurant or bar.
Chambord versus crème de cassis
Chambord is a French branded liqueur made from raspberries, blackberries and black currants. It’s sweet but complex, with flavors of Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey, and cognac. Chambord colors your champagne in a sophisticated peach and rose color.
Chambord is more expensive, but a small bottle will do lots Cocktails. I think it’s worth it. If you appreciate St. Germain, you’ll enjoy Chambord too.
Creme de Cassis is made with black currants. It’s dark, thick, syrupy, and sweet. This will make your Kir Royales more intense pink and sweet (similar to a Cosmopolitan in both cases).
While it may be the traditional liquor that Kir Royales is made from in France, I couldn’t find a good crème de cassis in the US.
In short, Chambord is my favorite. It enhances the taste of champagne instead of overpowering it, which is the hallmark of a good champagne cocktail. If you try them side by side like me, you will surely agree!

Learn how to make a classic kir royale with this simple recipe! You only need two ingredients – champagne and chambord (or crème de cassis). Feel free to use a little more or less liquor to suit your taste buds. Recipe as written makes 1 drink. *
- ½ ounce ((1 tablespoon) Chambord or Crème de Cassis
- 5 ounces chilled brut (dry) champagne
- Optional side dish: 1 fresh raspberry
- Pour the chambord into a champagne flute. While holding the glass at a 45-degree angle (this will help protect the bubbles), gently pour the champagne.
- Garnish with a raspberry if you like. Serve immediately.
* How to scale this recipe: A bottle of champagne makes about 5 drinks. A small (375 ml) bottle of Chambord is enough for 25 drinks. So you need five times as much champagne as Chambord.
